Dwight McNeil almost gave Burnley a shock lead inside the opening five minutes but his low drive was cleared off the line by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Liverpool moved in front through their first real attempt at goal when Diogo Jota glanced his header past Nick Pope after getting on to the end of Kostas Tsimikas’ cross.
Mohamed Salah had a goal ruled out for offside before Sadio Mane spurned a chance from close-range after being found by a defence-splitting pass from Alexander-Arnold.
James Tarkowski almost pulled the visitors level just before half-time when he beat Alisson to a long-ball but his header dropped just wide of the empty goal.
