UNION CARBIDE SALES, CALCIUM CARBIDE ADVERTISING PACKAGE, RURAL LIGHTING, 1928. Union Carbide Sales Company Calcium Carbide Building 30 East 42nd Street New York, New York. We are pleased to offer for sale this rare, vintage, rural electrification-related brochure in good condition! Little did Americans know at the time this brochure was printed, that 18-months later, the United States would plummet into economic chaos. This Great Depression Era, 1928 advertising flier was primarily targeted at agricultural owners / homesteads / farms where electric lighting was either unavailable or simply too expensive. This brochure is over 95-years old and would make a fantastic addition to any collection, museum or archival library dealing with the rural electrification of the United States. THIS PACKAGE INCLUDES: The 1928 4-page brochure advertising Union Carbide’s 100-pound drum of calcium carbide for only $5.40 (today, 100-pounds of calcium carbide costs approximately $3,000), the recipient’s envelope (postmarked April 27, 1928) and a return envelope (sealed shut due to 95-years of ambient moisture). DIMENSIONS: This publication (closed) measures 8½” x 11”, contains four pages and is in good condition – – especially given its age. A LITTLE ABOUT THE RECIPIENT: Based on our research, we believe the recipient of this correspondence was Aaron S. Moul (born around 1875) of York County, Pennsylvania (where Thomasville is located). A LITTLE ABOUT UNION CARBIDE: The Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation was formed on November 1, 1917, from the merger of the Union Carbide Company (founded in 1898), the National Carbon Company (founded in 1886), Linde Air Products Company, (a maker of liquid oxygen at Buffalo confiscated from Gesellschaft für Linde’s Eismaschinen AG under the Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917), and the Prest-O-Lite company, manufacturer of calcium carbide in Indianapolis. In 1920, the company set up a chemicals division which manufactured ethylene glycol for use as automotive antifreeze. The company continued to acquire related chemical producers, including the Bakelite Corporation in 1939. The company changed its name to “Union Carbide Corporation” in 1957 and was often referred to simply as “Carbide.” A LITTLE ABOUT CALCIUM CARBIDE: Acetylene was discovered in 1836 by Edmund Davy, who identified it as a “new carburet of hydrogen”. It was an accidental discovery while attempting to isolate potassium metal. It was rediscovered in 1860 by French chemist Marcellin Berthelot, who coined the name acétylène. Today, 20% of the acetylene produced is used as a welding gas for cutting steel. In the late 1800s up through the 1930s acetylene was also used in isolated residences (such as farm homes and small towns) to provide rather bright gas lighting. Calcium Carbide crystals were deposited in a sealed steel container, water was added and the container sealed shut. The resulting chemical reaction created acetylene gas which was then piped throughout the home / business (AKA “the plant”) to provide “gas lighting” at night (acetylene gas provided a much brighter light than kerosene and oil lamps). This type of rural lighting was popular prior to the introduction of wind turbines or gasoline engines turning generators to charge large lead-acid batteries which in turn powered electric light bulbs -or- the 1936 Rural Electrification Act being enacted (to provide farms with inexpensive electric lighting and power). Calcium carbide was also widely used in carbide mining lamps. Water dripping on carbide produced acetylene gas, which burned and produced light. While these lamps gave steadier and brighter light than candles, they were very dangerous in coal mines (where flammable methane gas made them a potential explosion hazard). Today, carbide lamps are still used in slate, copper, and tin mines (where methane is not a serious hazard); however, most miners’ lamps have now been replaced by electric lamps. Carbide lamps are still used today for mining in some of the worlds’ poorer countries; for example, in the silver mines near Potosí, Bolivia. Carbide lamps were also used extensively as headlights in early automobiles, motorcycles and bicycles (later being replaced by incandescent light bulbs). THE UNITED STATES RURAL ELECTRIFICATION ACT: In 1936 the Rural Electrification Act was enacted by a 1935 executive order. The Rural Electrification Administration (REA), a former agency of the United States Department of Agriculture, was charged with administering loan programs for electrification and telephone service in rural areas. The REA undertook providing farms with inexpensive electric lighting and power. GENERAL NOTE / DISCLAIMER: Due to the brochure’s age, there may be some minor damage: Maybe small tears, stains, or soiling, corners of the pages bent, damage or separation along the fold, pencil or pen marks, browning from age, etc.; however, this brochure is still in good condition. The brochure was folded down the middle. The brochure was then been “tri-folded” for insertion into a #10 envelope for mailing. The recipient’s envelope was torn open along the right side. The reply envelope has been sealed shut due to ambient moisture.
