Tottenham have finally reached an agreement with Atalanta over the signing of defender Cristian Romero.
The north London side have made the signing of a centre-back a priority this summer and have now agreed a deal with the Serie A side for Romero, who according to Sky Sports will fly to London within the next 24 hours to complete a medical and put pen to paper.
Romero’s arrival is a statement of intent from Spurs who have backed new manager Nuno Espirito Santo in the transfer market, the Argentina international set to become the second-most expensive signing in the club’s history behind Tanguy Ndombele.
Romero was named as the best defender in Serie A last season following an impressive campaign for Atalanta, before forming part of the Argentina side that won this summer’s Copa America.
The move has been agreed following Atalanta’s securing of a replacement for the 23-year-old, with the Italian side set to sign Merih Demiral on loan from divisional rivals Juventus to fill the void left by Romero’s exit.
Spurs sporting director Fabio Paratici has continued to use his knowledge of the Italian market and Romero will be the second player to swap Atalanta for Spurs this summer, following goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini’s move to the Premier League on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy.
