In what could end up being yet another sensational turn of events, the saga of Lionel Messi’s renewal may have one more twist in store, if the recent flurry of reports are to be believed, stating that Barcelona have tabled one final proposal to Messi, who has all but departed.
The main propagators of the report are Spanish outlet La Porteria, who have made the exclusive announcement on their Twitter, where they say that the possibility of Messi playing a Barcelona shirt once more is not entirely ruled out yet.
According to the outlet, Barcelona are trying to renegotiate one final, last-minute offer with Messi and the talks are being mediated primarily by president Joan Laporta’s CEO Ferran Reverter, who is supposedly the man behind rejecting the La Liga-CVC deal after spotting flaws in the arrangement.
Various other sources have subsequently chimed in, confirming that the story is not yet over. Journalist Joan Vehils, who is apparently close to Laporta’s entourage also seems to substantiate the reports.
Meanwhile, SPORT journalist Albert Roge is also relaying the same news, also confirmed by another journalist Veronica Brunati. The latter however, has been providing all the updates surrounding Messi’s signing with Paris Saint-Germain and says their official announcement is ready and that the Argentine will travel to Paris today to finalize the contract details.
She also states that Messi will only travel after all the paperwork and details have been validated, but now Barcelona have indeed jumped back into a negotiation, with Reverter leading the charge, believing it was a mistake to let Messi go.
It is incredibly difficult to place any weight on these rumours after Messi’s farewell and his imminent signing with PSG. Additionally, Barcelona’s finances are still in tatters. It would be foolish to hope, but perhaps these reports can be taken with an air of cautious optimism.
