Report names Man Utd’s four ‘preferred’ targets as Solskjaer looks to strengthen key positions

Manchester United’s transfer plans are understood to include the signing of four new players this summer, with Jadon Sancho, Pau Torres, Declan Rice and Harry Kane named as the club’s ‘preferred’ targets.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has discussed the need for reinforcements during the summer transfer window, following the club’s penalty shoot-out defeat to Villarreal in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

United have shown steady improvement over the past three seasons but remain without silverware since the 2016/17 campaign, with Solskjaer insisting his side need ‘two or three players’ to strengthen the starting XI as they bid to challenge next term.

According to the Guardian, the Red Devils are seeking reinforcements at centre-back and defensive midfield, in addition to a wide forward and a central striker, with the aforementioned quartet the club’s ‘preferred’ targets for each position.

Sancho has been on the club’s radar for some time after transfer talks with Borussia Dortmund last summer, though the Bundesliga side’s dropping of the winger’s valuation to around £82m makes a deal more viable for this year’s window.

The England international is claimed to be the ‘most likely’ incoming at United this summer amongst those names, though the Red Devils remain keen on signing Harry Kane following the forward’s admission he wants to leave Tottenham.

Kane’s future looks set to dominate transfer headlines with Chelsea and Manchester City also keen on his signing, the latter appearing the favourites to sign the England captain in what would likely represent a British transfer record deal.

Torres – who formed part of the victorious Villarreal side on Wednesday night – has attracted interest in recent months and could be available for as little as €30m, whilst United are long-term admirers of West Ham midfielder Rice.

The 22-year-old captained the Hammers to their highest league finish in 22 years this season and the club’s qualification for Europe will make prising the star from the London Stadium difficult.

Rice is also understood to remain content at West Ham and is in no rush to leave the club following their progress this season and his prominent role in their success.

Signing all of those four names looks hugely unlikely given the cost and availability of the players mentioned, though Solskjaer will consider alternative targets as he bids to construct a more balanced and competitive squad ahead of next season.
