Spain ran riot against Costa Rica in their opening game of the 2022 World Cup and Barcelona starlet Gavi was centre stage.
Dani Olmo got the goalscoring started with barely ten minutes on the clock as he netted Spain’s 100th goal in the competition but it was the Barcelona youngster that would steal the headlines in the second half.
Gavi played a key part in Ferran Torres’ second goal of the game to give the Spaniards a commanding 4-0 lead before adding a fifth with a wonderful outside-of-the-boot finish in the 74th minute.
That goal cemented the 18-year-old as Spain’s youngest scorer at a World Cup (a record previously held by Raúl) as well as becoming the youngest player to score in the competition since the great Brazilian Pelé.
Having more than caught the eye during the last Euro’s, this boy wonder’s international stock continues to rise.
