Coronation is a pattern that commemorates an event that never occurred, the crowning of King Edward the VIII. The pattern was introduced in 1936 in anticipation of the Coronation, and proved to be one of the most popular patterns ever put out; in fact a reproduction of Coronation is occasionally still manufactured in China. The design, the result of a competition among design students at Rensellaer Polytechnic, is high style Art Deco. The pierced work emphasizes the motif of flower, leaves and rays of light set atop a column-like handle. Coronation is also a pattern that stands up very well to use. The bonbon server came into existence in the 1880s, and survived in a variety of forms for many years. The small ones of the 1930s, basically little flat servers with piercing, were used for serving nuts and mints. Some were actually sold as bridge pieces, used for the nibbles put out when playing bridge. The players were frequently ladies and referred to themselves as “The Girls”. They met and played cards and ate nuts and mints and bridge mix, using the bonbon server to fill their individual cups. The bonbon server offered here measures about 4 1/2″. This is not a piece of new silver. It shows the patina of as much as 85 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is a 3 oval icon on the top of the front handle, which identifies this piece as having been in use at one of the ODD FELLOWS LODGES There is no silver loss.
