New Delft Persian Jars Lids Urns Green With Black 1911, Set Of Two, Very Rare. Based on the wedding date of my great grandparents who received these as gifts, we believe it was right around 1911. Approx just over 15” tall and about 7-8” at the widest point (hard to measure due to shape!). One lid on a jar had the very top part break in a move, which has been repaired. Very hard to notice but you can see a few chips in that area (see pics)- it also has a small chip on the very top of that lid. Chip on rim of another jar (only notice if lid is off). Tiny bubble in finish (see pic) towards base of one jar. This is directly from Delft regarding the history of these two rare jars: “The marking AB are the initials of J.A. Burghoorn. He worked at our factory from 1892 until 1949. The beautiful jars are made in the collection New Delft. As the name suggests, this was a completely new product in terms of decoration and manufacture. Based on a technique developed by H. W. Mauser, the dark-firing clay was first coated with a white engobe layer upon which the painted decoration was applied. A transparent glaze was then applied. The decorations were designed by Leon Senf, who had been inspired for this series by patterns on Persian pots dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. At the beginning of 1910 the colours used were blue, green and red, whereas by the end of that year metallic decorations (New Delft lustre) and bicolour decorations (mainly blue and turquoise) had also been introduced. In early 1911 the New Delft green (New Persian) made its appearance. This had an engobe layer upon which an abstract decoration in black was painted. The object was then coated with a deep green opaque glaze. The company was forced to cease the production of New Delft in 1936 or thereabouts because the necessary raw materials were no longer available due to the threat of the Second World War. New Delft is still not produced today for various reasons, although several attempts to restart production were made in the fifties.”
