It seems fitting that a superb game between Italy and Belgium was ultimately decided by a superb goal.
And our Man of the Match was …
Lorenzo Insigne
Italy have had a few heroes at this tournament already.
Against Switzerland in the group stage it was Manuel Locatelli who stepped into the spotlight, before Matteo Pessina scored the winner against Wales in the next game.
In the round of 16 it was Federico Chiesa who delighted his compatriots with a goal against Austria that was beginning to look like it wouldn’t come.
The opening group game against Turkey feels like a lifetime ago, and it’s easy to forget Lorenzo Insigne scored a great goal to lift the roof off the Stadio Olimpico that night.
And if you liked that, you will have loved his next trick.
With Italy leading 1-0 against Belgium on Friday night, the Napoli man picked up the ball and drove at goal before unleashing a beautiful curling strike which nestled in the top corner.
It was a great golazzo from a great player who with his diminutive frame and rolled down socks sometimes seems like he belongs to a sepia-tinted bygone era.
But make no mistake, Insigne belongs very much to this era, and we could be talking about his performances at Euro 2020 for a long time to come.
