Runs well forward only it has no E-unit & no headlight WARNING: The older black Marx transformers did not have a built-in circuit breaker like their later 1950’s Allstate and their 1960’s “Hobby Transformers”. For those older Marx transformers Marx sold a separate circuit breaker with a light that would indicate when a the breaker tripped, It looked like a signal light and would be installed between the transformer and the track contact. The circuit breaker bulb stays off during normal operations but pops on when the breaker trips so the voltage that had been going to the locomotive goes to the circuit breaker indicator lighting it. As for older Marx transformer that did not have a built-in circuit breaker, those should only be used it you have installed an after-market circuit breaker, as there could be an electrical shock or fire danger without one. That makes the thickness of the flange a bit less and makes it possible for those locos to travel through some other brands of switches. Over the years, some hobbyists may have replaced an original, single reduction motor in a locomotive. There are reports that the factory may also have done so while repairing locos for customers. You really have to look closely at the drive wheels to be sure. If the gears go all the way to the edge of the flange, it is single reduction. If the gear teeth do not go to the edge, it is double reduction. The following steam locomotives came with double reduction gears. 333 (4-6-2) 666 (2-4-2) 1666 (2-4-2) 1829 (4-6-4) The following locomotives came with single or double reduction gears.
