Manchester United are set to land the signature of Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane, reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reports.
The Red Devils had already agreed personal terms with the France international, and they have now reached an agreement with Los Blancos to sign him.
The final details including paperwork are being completed. It could be a matter of time before the clubs formally confirm the transfer.
Sportslens view:
Varane has been a long-term target for the Red Devils. He was initially on their radar in 2011 before Los Blancos signed him from Lens.
The club made another attempt to land his signature in 2019 without success. They have eventually managed to bring in to Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old is widely regarded as one of the world’s best central defenders, and his arrival is definitely a big coup for the club.
He should provide an upgrade to the United backline that was guilty of conceding early goals at different stages of the previous campaign.
His presence should boost their prospects of challenging for the league title. It remains to be seen whether the spending spree continues.
The club have recently been linked with Sevilla’s Jules Kounde. His arrival could see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer play with a back three next term.
Varane will become the club’s second signing of the summer transfer window after the arrival of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.
