AS report that two Premier League clubs have launched bids for Atlético Madrid midfielder Saúl Ñíguez and his departure could be imminent.
Manchester United and Chelsea both want the player, who, after being free to leave all summer has started the new La Liga season in Atlético’s starting eleven. He is, however, playing in a left-wing-back position, an area in which he is not keen on playing in. The 26-year-old has sat down with the club in recent times to discuss playing in a more central role and having more responsibility.
In the club’s first game of the season against Celta Vigo, he provided the assist for Ángel Correa’s second goal and in the second game against Elche in the Wanda Metropolitano, he completed the full 90 minutes. Saúl’s idea of leaving would not have changed despite continuing to be important for Diego Simeone.
The report suggests that a loan move may be the most likely option. The proposed strategy for acquiring his services is similar to the one that brought Álvaro Morata to Juventus; a loan in exchange for a substantial sum of money and the payment of a large part of his salary.
Manchester United have been the club with the most interest although, according to sources close to the operation, Chelsea have taken the lead in the last few hours.
