AC Milan director Paolo Maldini has essentially confirmed that Gianluigi Donnarumma will be leaving the club when his contract expires.
All major sources are reporting that Milan are close to announcing the signing of Mike Maignan from Lille who seems set to become the club’s new number one, with Donnarumma’s contract expiring at the end of June and everything pointing towards him leaving Milan after nine years. It is certainly a statement from Paolo Maldini and co. that they will not be held to ransom by a goalkeeper and his agent who are adjudged to have excessive demands.
Paolo Maldini spoke during a live chat on Milan’s official Twitch channel this evening and the Donnarumma topic was brought up by one of the hosts, with the former captain all but confirming he is on the way out.
“I think we have to thank all the players who have made this incredible season. Gigio was a leader and often a captain. People have a hard time understanding what it means to be a professional, who must be ready to change clubs,” he said (via MilanNews).
“It’s difficult to accept, it is increasingly difficult to find careers. We must have respect for those who have given so much to Milan, who have never disrespected us. The paths diverge, I can only wish him the best. “
