Bayern Munich reportedly sacked Julian Nagelsmann because they were scared of missing out on more titles, but the Bundesliga giants were knocked out of the DFB Pokal in Thomas Tuchel’s second game in charge.
In the opening half, Leroy Sané led the attacking waves for the record title holders but saw multiple efforts fall short as Bayerntook control early on.
Eventually, the breakthrough arrived when Joshua Kimmich’s corner met the head of a leaping Dayot Upamecano, who towered above everyone and the ball nestled in the net.
After conceding, Freiburg then came alive, threatening Bayern’s back line and the hosts had no answers.
A poor clearance eventually saw the ball fall to Nicolas Höfler outside the box and he put his laces through the ball perfectly, sending the ball beyond a diving Yann Sommer for 1-1.
The likes of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Matthijs de Ligt and Sané attempted to regain the lead before the break but couldn’t find the net. Freiburg, meanwhile, held on.
Coming out after the break, both sides demonstrated they were ready to take the game to the opposition, with both attacking lines piling on the pressure.
The closest chance to take the lead came through Benjamin Pavard when his header hit off the crossbar at the hour mark.
As time ticked away, Bayern continued to tinker, but Freiburg’s disciplined squad managed to stifle most of their threats. Maximilian Eggestein and Ritsu Doan, in particular, impressed in the second half.
Late on, substitute Serge Gnabry sent a shot a foot wide of the far post and he will be frustrated with missing the chance as some luck went Freiburg’s way late on.
With seemingly the last effort of the game, Jamal Musiala’s handball handed the visitors a 93rd-minute penalty.
Lucas Höler then blasted home beyond Sommer, and Freiburg picked up their first ever win over Bayern in Munich and knocked the giants out of the cup.
