Borussia Dortmund walked away with all three points after beating Bayer Leverkusen 4-3 in an end-to-end thriller at the BayArena on Saturday.
Scorers: Wirtz 9′, Schick 45+1′, Diaby 55′; Haaland 37′, 77′ (P), Brandt 49′, Guerreiro 71′
Bayer Leverkusen 3
Borussia Dortmund 4
The breakthrough came early after Paulinho picked off a poor pass from Raphaël Guerreiro and teed up Florian Wirtz who made it 1-0 for the hosts eight minutes in.
Julian Brandt almost equalised immediately after for the visitors but couldn’t find his finishing touch.
However, Dortmund eventually levelled things up when an un-marked Erling Haaland thumped his header past goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký.
Minutes later, Jude Bellingham thought he had given the visitors the lead but VAR overturned the goal.
Then right before half-time, the tables turned in favour of Leverkusen as Euro 2020 star Patrik Schick made it 2-1.
The action continued after the break and Brandt came to the rescue for the visitors tying things up right after the restart until Moussa Diaby restored Leverkusen’s lead six minutes later.
Chances continued to fly at either end of the pitch but things eventually fell in favour of the visitors.
A perfect free-kick from Guerreiro hit the top corner to make things 3-3 before VAR let Haaland cooly convert from the spot for the lead. He now has 65 goals in 65 games for his club.
With the result, Dortmund sit second while Leverkusen sit fifth.
