Chelsea view Romelu Lukaku as the ‘most realistic’ transfer target amongst their centre-forward options as the west Londoners consider a move to re-sign the Inter Milan star.
Lukaku has been linked with a return to the Premier League this summer amid Inter’s concerning finances, the Serie A champions having seen manager Antonio Conte depart after being informed of the club’s need to cut costs.
The 28-year-old scored 24 league goals and provided a further 11 assists for Inter in 2020/21, no player across the division contributing directly to more goals as the club won a first league title in over a decade.
According to the Mail, Chelsea are now interested in a move to bring Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge, having signed the forward as a teenager before selling him to Everton in a £28m deal amid a lack of opportunities.
Thomas Tuchel is desperate to sign a new centre-forward this summer and the Belgian is viewed as a ‘more realistic’ target than either Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland or Tottenham star Harry Kane.
Lukaku has been valued in the region of £100m, though Chelsea are hopeful of lowering that asking price as the newly-crowned European champions bid to add goals to an improved defensive record under Tuchel.
Lukaku’s arrival could help the west Londoners close the gap to Manchester City in the Premier League as the Blues look to build on their shock Champions League triumph.
