Atlético Madrid have been crowned 2020/21 LaLiga champions after what proved to be a dramatic final Saturday.

Here’s what happened …

Suarez nets winner as Atleti lift the title

Atlético Madrid are champions of Spain for the 11th time in the club’s history after coming from behind to win and subsequently relegate Real Valladolid.

The hosts threw a huge spanner in the works when Óscar Plano broke down the field and slotted past Jan Oblak to open the scoring early in the first half.

And that was how the scoreline stayed until 12 minutes into the second half, when Ángel Correa toe-poked Atlético level.

But then it was of course Luis Suarez who put the Rojiblancos in front when he latched onto a misplaced pass by a Villarreal defender and finished into the bottom corner.

That goal proved to be the winner as Diego Simeone’s side lift their first title since 2013/14.

Real Madrid come back to beat Villarreal but it’s not enough

Real Madrid came from behind to win in what could be Zinedine Zidane’s last match in charge of the club.

Moments after Valladolid’s shock opener in the other game, Villarreal’s Yeremi Pino put the visitors ahead in Madrid.

Karim Benzema then thought he’d drawn Los Blancos level with a header in the second half but to the Frenchman’s dismay, it was disallowed by VAR for offside.

Benzema did equalise in the dying minutes before Luka Modrić netted a stoppage time winner, but it wasn’t enough for the title.

That result combined with Real Betis’s victory over Celta Vigo means Villarreal finish seventh and will go into the Conference League, unless they win the Europa League.

Barcelona finish on a positive note with win at Eibar

Barcelona secured a third-placed finish with a win at Eibar courtesy of a late Antoine Griezmann winner.

Betis come back from the dead to secure Europa League football

A sensational comeback from 2-0 down – in which Cristian Tello was also sent off – means Betis finished sixth and will be playing Europa League football next season.

A late own goal from Juan Pérez gave La Real a victory which means they finish fifth and will also go into the Europa League next season.

Elche pull off the Great Escape on the final day

Elche survived relegation by beating Athletic and leapfrogging Huesca into 17th place.

Huesca drop down due to final day stalemate

Huesca were unable to muster a victory on the final day, meaning they join Valladolid and Eibar in going down.
