CHELSEA HEAD TO EFL CUP FINAL AFTER THRASHING MIDDLESBROUGH
Chelsea booked their place in the EFL Cup Final with a 6-1 demolition of Middlesbrough in the semi-final second leg. Chelsea will await the winner of Liverpool and Fulham in Wednesday’s semi-final.
Chelsea 6
Middlesbrough 1
Scorers: Howson (OG) 15′, Fernández 29′, Disasi 36′, Palmer 42′, 78′, Madueke 81′
The Blues’ backline was on their toes to keep any threatening breaks at bay however.
Chelsea’s frustrations wouldn’t last long however, as they pulled themselves level on aggregate before the 20 minute mark when Armando Broja’s shot deflected in off the knee of Jonny Howson.
The tension in Stamford Bridge was eased when Enzo Fernández pounced on a loose ball to tap home and deliver his side the lead.
The tie was all but wrapped up before the break when Axel Disasi darted in behind the Boro defence before stabbing his effort in past the keeper to put Chelsea 3-0 up on the night, 3-1 on aggregate.
Cole Palmer joined the Chelsea party in the dying minutes of the half by caressing his effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
It was smooth sailing for the Blues after the restart as they slowed the game down to a crawl with their sizable lead in hand.
Palmer registered his second of the night late on to put Chelsea five ahead only minutes before Noni Madueke got his name on the scoresheet as well.
Morgan Rogers pulled one back for Boro but it was merely a consolation strike.
