Portugal rejuvenated with Ronaldo left out
Scorers: Ramos 17′,51′ 67′, Pepe 33′, Guerreiro 55′, Leão 90+2; Akanji 58′
Portugal boss Fernando Santos raised more than a few eyebrows by leaving Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench for their first knockout game of the competition, but was fully vindicated when his young replacement fired in a hat-trick as part of a truly dominant display.
Portugal took the lead when Benfica forward Gonçalo Ramos – who replaced Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting lineup – fired home from a tight angle inside the box in his first ever start for Portugal.
And it wasn’t long before 39-year-old Pepe had made it 2-0 with a thumping header from a corner.
Fernando Santos will have been pleased with his side at half-time as they finished strongly, as Ramos forced another save from Sommer just before the whistle.
After the break, the night became even more incredible for Ramos as he delivered his brace with a finish from close range, almost certainly putting Portugal into the quarter-final.
The football was free-flowing and fluid as Raphaël Guerreiro made it four with a well-executed finish high into the roof of the net as Portugal were four goals to the good before the hour mark.
Manchester City’s Manuel Akaji then grabbed a a consolation goal for Switzerland as he found himself unmarked at the back post from a corner and turned the ball in.
Yet this was a night for 21-year-old Gonçalo Ramos as he completed his hat-trick before the 70th minute after he was played in after a quick exchange of passes in the box played him in for the finish.
Ronaldo was introduced with 15 minutes to go, and had the ball in the back of the net less than ten minutes later, but unfortunately for him he was a long way offside.
A superb night for the Portuguese was concluded with a stunning goal from substitute Rafael Leão when he cut inside his defender and shot from distance.

Spain’s penalty curse continues as they exit
Morocco shocked Spain on penalties to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time in their history.
After a compelling but scoreless 90 minutes, Morocco were victorious in the second shootout of the tournament as Spain felt penalty heartbreak for the third consecutive tournament – failing to score a single spot kick.
The first chance of the first half fell to Morocco, with Achraf Hakimi whipping a 25-yard free-kick narrowly over the top, while Marco Asensio lashed into the side-netting after an excellent run to beat the offside trap.
The second half failed to produce anything by way of goalmouth action, with La Rojadominating possession but doing little with it, although Unai Simón did almost cause an injury-time panic attack by taking too much time in his area, only for the chance to escape Morocco as the game moved into extra-time.
In the final moment of the first half of extra-time, the underdogs came close to breaking the deadlock on a rare break but Walid Cheddira snatched at his chance when through on goal and fired straight at Simón.
And with the final moment of the second half of extra-time, Spain came within inches of breaking Moroccan hearts, only for substitute Pablo Sarabia’s strike to hit the post.
In the shootout, Pablo Sarabia, Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets all missed from 12 yards as they lost their third successive shootout to exit an international tournament – Achraf Hakimi supplying the coupe de grâce with a Panenka for a 3-0 victory.
