Manchester United are said to be in ‘pole position’ in the race to sign Harry Kane this summer after the striker asked to leave Spurs.
After a career without any silverware to date and with Spurs once again failing to qualify for the Champions League for a second successive season, the England captain has informed Daniel Levy of his desire to leave.
Manchester City have been widely suggested to be the favourites to land the striker, with suggestions last month that they had tabled an offer worth £100 million, City offering a number of players in exchange – including Raheem Sterling or Gabriel Jesus – in order to do a deal.
However, Football Insider have now boldly claimed that it is Manchester United who are in ‘pole position’ to sign the 27-year-old, with the Red Devils having been ‘given encouragement’ that a deal can be done.
Publically, Spurs have said that Kane is not for sale, though the report says that the North London club are privately saying that a deal would be done if they were to receive £150m.
United have already agreed a deal worth £73m to sign Jadon Sancho while they are also pursuing Raphael Varane and Eduardo Camavinga, though the report reckons United are willing to ‘spend big’ to beat City and Chelsea to Kane’s signature.
They add that Spurs have asked for £100 million plus two first-team players in order to meet their valuation, though there are no suggestions as to the players who would potentially be involved.
It remains to be seen whether United could stretch to those kind of sums in the current market, with English football stadia having remained largely empty for almost 18 months due to the ongoing pandemic.
