Sunstone is a plagioclase feldspar that has red, more rarely green or blue glitter which is caused by light reflections from tiny hematite or goethite platelets. The name derives from sunstones believed to have been used for navigation in the Middle Ages. Sunstone is a gem variety of Feldspar and a cousin of Labradorite. Feldspar is a family of silicates that makes up about 60% of the Earth’s crust. Sunstone is known for its iridescent reflections or “flash” when it catches the light. Chemical Formula: (Ca,Na)((Al,Si)2Si2O8); Color: Orange, Yellow; Hardness: 6 to 6.5; Felspar Group; Sunstone or can be also called Heliolite. The name Heliolite has been derived from the Greek ‘helios’ and ‘lithos,’ which mean ‘sun’ and ‘stone’. Sunstone is a member of the Feldspar family, and is named for its warm shades of gold, orange, reds and browns that sparkle like the sun. Inclusions of Goethite or Hematite refract light between the different crystal layers and produce an iridescent effect as the stone is viewed from various angles. Sunstone may be clear and transparent, or opaque, and is readily available on the market. Deposits of this stone have been found in Norway, Greece, Russia, India, Canada and the USA.
